The Golf Scientist

This is how I read greens

I mark my golf ball with a coin. Then I step back to look at the flag. While I’m doing practice strokes I like to see if it is downhill or uphill and I feel the grain with my hand. I look at the cup twice and then place a line on the ball and hope that it goes in the hole.

For power, I recommend hoping first to line up open to the target slightly and with a driver I put the ball on my front foot and then I stretch my hands back and swing through with my hips and I try to stay in my posture.

For bunker golf shots or sand shots I try to hit the ball first for a fairway bunker shot and for a green side bunker shot I try to hit the sand first and open the club face and dig my feet in the sand. Remember always try to get over the hill of the bunkers and don’t touch the sand with your club hover your club head without touching the sand or you will get a penalty golf shot.

I recommend a fade in golf and hit it most of the time. I like to hit it where I am aiming at. I try to aim at the opposite side of the tees I’m standing on. I like to pick out a leaf 2 feet in front of me and then put the tee down on that line and aim away from it if you want a curve or aim straight at the leaf if you want to stay on that line. Remember the club sends the ball and the path you take bends it.

I recommend taking an alignment stick and holding it on the grip. Then get in your set up and wherever the path you stretch slowly is how you need to swing feeling wise. Then once you get the feeling, swing without and swing through chipping.

I recommend high shots and easy and putting from the fringe some and hope for a one chip, two putts or better. Weight on front foot with hips and shoulders aimed open or straight. Then do hinge and hold meaning hinge your wrist on a chip and pitch move your whole body through with a stable head not moving then stop your wrist when the club head gets 1 foot behind the ball.  Then turn through with whole body and look at the target.

For putting setup, I recommend gripping it loosely and medium stance head behind the ball until you see the flagstick and aim straight at it always.

For power with a driver is different for everyone. For me, I like to just swing fast without rushing and work on flexibility.
